How to Write Etsy Listings That Actually Sell

[Published: May 2026 | 12 min read]

Most Etsy listings fail because sellers write for themselves instead of the algorithm. They describe what the product IS. They don't describe what the buyer is SEARCHING FOR. The gap between these two approaches is the difference between 0 sales and 100 sales per month.

Why Most Etsy Listings Fail

Etsy has 7.5 million active sellers. The top 1% generate 80% of the revenue. The difference isn't product quality — it's listing quality. Specifically: keyword targeting in titles, strategic tag usage, and descriptions that convert browsers into buyers.

The Etsy Title Formula: Use All 140 Characters

Etsy gives you 140 characters. Most sellers use 60. That's leaving money on the table. Every unused character is a missed keyword opportunity.

Formula: [Primary keyword] + [Secondary keyword] + [Attribute] + [Use case/recipient] + [Differentiator]

Example: "Lavender Soy Candle | Hand-Poured Aromatherapy | 8oz Frosted Jar | 45-Hour Burn | Relaxation Gift for Her"

This title uses 106 characters and contains 7 searchable keyword phrases. Each pipe-separated segment is a distinct search term a buyer might use.

Key rules: Front-load your primary keyword. Use pipes or dashes to separate phrases. Include a recipient (gift for her, gift for mom). Include a differentiator (handmade, organic, personalized). Never waste characters on your shop name.

Tags: All 13, Every Time, Multi-Word Only

Etsy allows exactly 13 tags per listing. Use all 13. Each tag should be a multi-word phrase (2-4 words), not a single word. Single-word tags are too competitive and too vague.

Wrong: "candle, soy, lavender, gift, handmade"

Right: "lavender soy candle, hand poured candle, aromatherapy gift, relaxation candle, 8oz candle jar"

The right version targets long-tail searches with lower competition and higher purchase intent. Allocate tags across: primary keywords (3-4), product variations (2-3), recipient/occasion (3-4), and style/aesthetic (2-3).

Description Structure: Hook, Details, Close

Etsy descriptions don't directly affect search ranking (tags and titles do). But they affect conversion rate — and conversion rate affects ranking indirectly through Etsy's listing quality score.

Structure: Hook (1 sentence that creates desire) → What it is (2-3 sentences) → Key details (bullet-style specs) → Shipping/sizing info → Soft CTA ("Add to cart" or "Order today")

The first 160 characters appear in search results. Make them count. Don't start with "This listing is for..." Start with the benefit or the emotion.

Photos: The Conversion Multiplier

Etsy allows 10 photos. Use all 10. Photo 1 (thumbnail) determines click-through rate from search. Photos 2-10 determine conversion rate on the listing page. Include: hero shot, scale reference, detail close-up, lifestyle context, packaging, and size chart.
